THE CRANBERRIES: PROMO TOUR IN THE UK

Just coinciding with the official release of Something Else, The Cranberries are on a little promo tour, where they gave several interviews in which they talked about the album and how they see themselves at this moment in their lives. Dolores O’Riordan spoke to Huffington Post UK in one of those interviews that will be forever kept on all her fans’ hearts. “I’m still fragile, but I look after myself”, she said, some encouraging words to her fans, who seem to have played an important role in her recovery: “I get a lot of really nice letters encouraging me, wishing me luck with my health, they don’t realise the strength they bring. Reading their nice words, it helps me to cope.” One can’t help getting emotional when reading her words.
For many of us, she has been the most inspiring example on earth; she has always been there for us in the hardest times. But she is a human being, and needs understanding and support as well. She deserves the love and happiness she keeps trying to give everyone else. But there is yet another joy Dolores wanted to give her fans in this interview. When asked about the best piece of advice she has ever been given, she said: “The best one I can remember came from Bono. He told me, ‘Remember people’s names. It’s respectful’.” As some cute anecdotes, Dolores says she is an athletic person and sports have helped her a lot. She likes running and swimming, goes to the pool often and does yoga. As far as for things she still has to do, she says she would like to visit India.

Dolores also talked to U105 Drive with Johnny Hero show, where she expressed her excitement about Belfast concert. She talked about how the members of her family are all connected to music, and she adds that her mother has a lovely voice.

In BBC UK, Noel & Dolores talked about Something Else, described by them as the end of one chapter and the beginning of something new. They now try to take it easy and not to repeat the mistakes they did in the past that led Dolores to breakdown. Now they will be touring around Europe for 6 weeks, then they will go to North America and Canada in September and October, and they will also visit South America and Australia in the winter. They expect to have some new material after the tour. Noel admits how hard it is for Dolores to have all the pressure on her but fortunately, she got to take over and regain control of her own life. They talk about how meaningful their old songs are to their fans, since they form part of their lives and how the production process was not as difficult as it might have seemed, and everything fell into place by itself.

They were also at Live BBC The One Show, where they gave an emotional performance of Linger with their talented string quartet. You can see the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScK26E4Akho

On Saturday 29th in the morning, Noel and Dolores were to BBC Breakfast, where they remembered their beginnings, their reunion and the origin of Something Else. They do not expect to have more gaps in their career, since now they are on tour they will have more time to write new material in a natural manner. “When we focus on it, we really focus on it”, Noel says. Dolores also talked about her health issues last year, when a bulging disc in her back made her stop playing the guitar. Her guitar, she explains, is too heavy and it makes her have problems of posture and with her neck, so she had to stop playing the guitar, something she has been depressed about.

With or without her guitar, nobody can question Dolores’ outstanding talent and the quality of her human nature. We really hope this will not sadden her anymore. Joyful times to both The Cranberries and their faithful fans are coming: The Cranberries’ Something Else is out now, and their European tour starts next week! Tickets are still available at Ticketmaster and www.cranberries.com

OLE KORETSKY AND DJ WOOL: DELUXE SUPPORTING ACT TO THE CRANBERRIES’ SHOWS

The Cranberries’ Something Else Tour starts in exactly one week, and we are having the best supporting act ever: Olé Koretsky and DJ Wool will delight the audience with an innovative PA show in which we will have the pleasure of enjoying some D.A.R.K. tracks, as well as some other material from their DJ-ing repertoire.

When you thought The Cranberries’ concert couldn’t get any more perfect than they already promise to be, Doctor Music and D.A.R.K. came up with the greatest news: Olé Koretsky and DJ Wool would be the supporting act that would open The Cranberries’ concerts during May and June. Olé Koretsky wanted to share with us his excitement about the news. Riding a stationary bicycle, he would explain the whole concept to the camera for a video he would post in D.A.R.K. socials:

“Getting ready to hit the road with The Cranberries. They’re working really hard on my little open set. It’s tough not having your band with you and a little bit challenge doing somebody’s songs without Andy and Dolores but I’ve got DJ Wool with me”

After two album release date postponements and two tour cancellations, many of us feared we would never have the chance to enjoy Science Agrees live. Fortunately, the situation is about to change. Olé Koretsky also explains the main concept of their “Live PA” show:

“And between the two of us we have vocals, guitars, a synthesizer rig, a DJ rig, a lot of MIDI cables and spaghetti… should be interesting.”

We can’t help being extremely excited about the last part:

“Hopefully the rest of the band can join us on stage, later in the year. Either way we’re going in and there should still be some tickets available. All the links and dates should be up on darkofficial.com and cranberries.com. See you soon.”

It is not the first time the band hints about the possibility of D.A.R.K. recording some new material: Two weeks ago, Koretsky shared a video in his socials titled “Serenading my corner”, in which a fragment of what sounded like a new track was being played. Bassist Andy Rourke has also talked about the existence of some brand-new material, in an interview for Music Radar: “In terms of the D.A.R.K project, we are in writing mode at the moment although our schedules are all over the place (…). But we have a few ideas already. Watch this space is all I can say.” Taking all of this into account, the idea of D.A.R.K. as a band doing some gigs, maybe during the American tour, does not seem so far away now.

But going back to the live PA that will open every show by The Cranberries during their acoustic tour, there is one thing that looks now even more revealing than it did in the first place: In March, Olé Koretsky published the following video in his Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/pg/OleKoretsky/videos/?ref=page_internal It was recorded in February, during his stay in Cancun for The Cranberries’ shows, and he described it with the following words: “new song about time travel. got a few fresh ones. #cessna + #livePA vs. #scienceagrees

“A few fresh ones” and the hashtags “LivePA vs Science Agrees” make all the sense now! Is this the beginning of the (definitive) D.A.R.K. era? We really hope so! Stay tuned!

SOMETHING ELSE: TO OUR FANS, FROM THE CRANBERRIES

The release of the new album by The Cranberries, Something Else, is getting closer, but the road has been long, and not always easy. Their own inner strength and their fans’ support have been two essential elements for The Cranberries in the creation process. This is what Dolores O’Riordan shared in one of her most personal interviews, for Soul Sisters Billboard.

In a calm and natural tone, Dolores opens the interview talking about Limerick, her hometown, and her performance on New Year’s Eve 2013 for Limerick City of Culture, and she sings their county song, “Limerick You’re My Lady”, which she learned at school. As she is the youngest of seven siblings, five of them boys, she feels that she has been “the girl of the group” since her childhood and that her life has been very connected to music: she learned to play tin whistle at the age of 5 and to dance Irish dance, a hobby that two of her siblings share. She describes her sister as very creative: she dances, but she also draws and writes.

Glancing at her past and the obstacles she had to overcome in life, she recalls a time 2 years ago when she didn’t feel well, a period she describes as “I was manic”; when she used to wear very strange clothes, with metal complements, masks… She remembers her beginnings in the music industry as a roller coaster: she went from joining The Cranberries in her school uniform at the age of 17 to reach the top. She had told her mother that she would be singing in the band for a year and that if things didn’t go well, she would go to college. Without realizing it, a promising future was awaiting her and it would lead her to be the frontwoman of one of the most mythical bands of the 1990s up to the present day. The interviewer emphasizes the wisdom with which she speaks despite how young she is. Dolores claims that being the frontwoman in a band involves having to prove to be three times better than a man to get to the same place.

Back to the present again, she takes some time to talk about the creation process, how she writes songs spontaneously when she gets the inspiration and stores them so she can select them later, when it’s time to record. The song “Why” is about her father’s death and how hard it was for her to get out of the initial shock that was such a traumatic experience. She felt that her father had not left, that somehow he was still with her and he was around protecting her; hence the recurring “somewhere in between here and heaven”, verse that opens the song. Dolores has always been concerned about death. Now she sees that death and sadness are parts of life. She feared that her father would die while she was on tour, just like it happened with her grandfather.

But not everything in this interview is sadness; Dolores also talks about what she felt when she became a mother: She sees motherhood as a gift, one of the happiest experiences in life. She wasn’t sure how being a mother could be compatible with going on tour with the band, but she has proved this in time perfectly.

She wrote “Twenty One” the day she turned 21, a time when she lived “in a dirty flat” with her first love; Dolores relates that first love as an experience that can be traumatic. “Linger” talks about her first kiss; “Dreams” about her first love. Over time she has achieved maturity, and this has brought her wisdom, serenity and self-confidence to deal with problems and get ahead.

She recalls her experience as a coach in The Voice of Ireland and says she was surprised to see 5 and 6 year olds greeting her on the street in Ireland, as they recognized her from TV even though they hadn’t heard of The Cranberries before. We can’t avoid feeling very lucky as we ourselves witnessed this, when a group of little dancers, with their white stockings and coloured skirts, went with their mothers into The Helix and greeted Dolores from the windows on the first floor.

Something Else is an intermediate step between the past and the future. Originally thought to commemorate the group’s 25th anniversary, The Cranberries now see it as a present to the fans. Dolores reflects on how technology and the Internet have changed the way music is consumed, but she says that it also allows her to be connected to the crowd all the time: she has been able to see conversations between her fans and this fact has allowed The Cranberries to be aware that people still love their music and want some more. This was what made them say: “maybe we should release something else…”

THE CRANBERRIES: WHEN REAL SUCCESS IS IN HAPPINESS

The Cranberries have matured musically, but also in the personal level. Two weeks before the publication of Something Else, the band has traveled to New York, where they have granted several interviews for the American press media. Back in Ireland, they have been talking to the Irish Times.

We go back to April 5th: The Cranberries arrived in New York and gave an interview for SiriusXM. In a disgruntled and even joking tone, Dolores tells how the idea of Something Else came about, following her reunion with The Cranberries for their performance in The Bachelorette in 2015. To this album there were two new songs added: “Rupture” and “Why”, that Dolores had written two and a half years ago, and that she decided to “hand them over” to the band. “The Glory” was written by The Cranberries just six months ago, while recording and rehearsing with the string quartet in Ireland.

One of the most interesting things The Cranberries have shared in these recent interviews is how touring gives them time to spend together, in which they end up composing new material in an almost natural manner, something that is more difficult for them to do separately. They confess that this was one of the main intentions to publish this new album and to organise the tour. Dolores admits that as they grow older it is a little harder to get on stage almost every night, or to decide if something she has written is new enough, but she believes in the importance of going on tour and trying new things; to work flat out and overcome her barriers and shyness, because this is how, she thinks, things are achieved.

They have also shared their experiences as a band for the Irish Times Culture, something they compare to a roller coaster: from their beginning to suddenly reaching the top charts during the 90’s; of how health made them put their feet back on the ground and other projects emerged during the band’s stand-by periods. They confess their own perception of The Cranberries as the most solid thing they have done, and they feel lucky for what they have achieved, for having been able to live on music and above all, they are grateful to see how the public still awaits for them. They do not miss the opportunity to talk about their near future plans: After Something Else, perceived by the group as an intermediate step between the previous and the new material, there will come a new album. Noel talks about how his friendship with Dolores is better than ever. They have had ups and downs, as it happens in all bands, sometimes due to lack of communication, misunderstanding or outside forces getting involved. However, when they sit down to talk, it is as if nothing had happened. Noel compares his relationship with Dolores as siblings. Now they talk every other day, and their friendship is healthier than ever. As for success, Dolores is calm and optimistic; she wants to record new material but she does not expect to experience the same success as they did back in the 90s. Nor that she feels she needs it. Now they are older and have other priorities; Success and fame do not longer concern her. Cyril Connolly said: Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self.” Perhaps this is the key to success: to be happy with what you do without expecting what you do to be the thing that makes you happy.

THE CRANBERRIES PREMIERE THEIR FIRST SINGLE, “WHY”

We did not expect it until Friday, but The Cranberries are a box of surprises. “Why” is the first single chosen from Something Else, a song that brings together both their essence and their evolution. Today we have had the pleasure of listening to it for the very first time on BBC Radio 2.

Producing the music we love costs a lot of effort, sacrifice and money. The only thing an artist or group deserves in return is respect to the fruit of their work. Unfortunately, in the internet age, premiering your own single has gone from being a right to being a real challenge. This was confirmed in the last week, after we saw how a private individual filtered the demo version of “Why”, the first single extracted from Something Else, uploading it into their own youtube channel. Today we can eventually express the sensations we have experienced while listening to this wonderful song, and in the best possible way, because The Cranberries have managed to recover that component of surprise that we thought had been robbed, by presenting today, in BBC Radio 2, a different version from the song we knew; the definitive version of “Why.”

With “Why”, The Cranberries get the perfect balance in a single that sounds like evolution, but taking a look back so as to not to leave their purest essence and roots behind. They experiment with new sounds and play an incredibly beautiful guitar plucking with what seems to be either a 12-string guitar, a mandolin or the harmonics of an acoustic guitar; However the guitar intro could have been taken from the Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? era, as well as Dolores’ backing vocals, which may have reminded many nostalgic of “Put Me Down”.

Perhaps one of the deepest and most reflective songs despite the apparent simplicity of its lyrics, “Why” reflects the questions and thoughts that went through Dolores O’Riordan’s mind right after her father died, in what she describes as “the most difficult time.” A clear and concise message, or how to say much with very little, these verses sink into the soul and touch the heart, because everyone, sometime, has wondered “why”.

“Why” is the cover letter of Something Else, which will be released next April 28th. You can listen to the podcast again (from the minute 48’16) in the link below: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08j256q

THE CRANBERRIES: THE PROMOTION BEGINS

April is coming, and this has been a hectic week for The Cranberries’ faithful fans. After sharing the acoustic version of “Linger” in Rolling Stone magazine and announcing their participation in Taratata, France, next March 21st, today we know that “Why?”, the first single from Something Else will be released next 24th of March, according to Italian press. Moreover, we already know some details about the new songs.

“Why”, a song that was already planned to be a single since the group’s recent visit to Cancun last February, may be the most heartbreaking and personal track Dolores faces on this new album. Described for a press release issued to BMG, and as collected by the website Jenesaispop, “it was written just after my father passed away, at the most difficult time.”

In that same press release, Dolores also explains how she wrote “The Glory” during rehearsals with the Irish Chamber Orchestra in the University of Limerick. “I was trying to think of the fact that there is always hope, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel no matter how dark life may be. It can be difficult at times, but you have to find the light and the positive side of things.” As if it had been drawn from her recent work with D.A.R.K., Science Agrees, “The Glory” returns to that metaphor of a candle that shines in the midst of the utter darkness. This theme is also present in “Rupture,” which delves into the dark abyss of depression and the difficulty but need to carry on and move forward.

Dolores also talks about the title Something Else: While the cover was a recreation of the classic No Need To Argue, the title chosen for the eighth album of The Cranberries plays with that of his debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can ‘ T We? It is about adding “something more”, it is not an end but it does not augur the beginning of a new stage, although Dolores is optimistic about the future of The Cranberries; She would like to continue and hopes that the album will be welcomed by the public.

Something Else goes on sale on April 28th. You can now reserve on Amazon, digital platforms such as iTunes or signed by the four members on the group’s official website. They will be on tour throughout Europe during the months of May, June, July and August.

THE CRANBERRIES WANTED TO SAY “SOMETHING ELSE”

The Cranberries are back with their eighth album. Something Else will see the light on April 28th this year. Inside it, we will find some of their greatest classics in acoustic version, together with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and three brand-new songs: “Why”, “Rupture” and “The Glory”.

The band has just published in their social networks the picture chosen as the front cover of the album, a photograph that, as we told you in previous publications, was taken during their visit to Cancun (Mexico) earlier in February, and with which they have succeeded in thrilling and moving their fans to tears, since it is a recreation of the cover of their mythic album No Need To Argue, 1994. In the picture we can see Mike and Fergal sitting on a brown couch; Fergal rests his left arm on the arm of the couch while Noel sits sideways on the other arm, and Dolores, sitting on the floor in front of them with her knees bent, looks to her left, just like in the cover of this classic album from the 90’s. It is his way of suggesting that the passing of time is evident and those Irish lads have grown up and matured, both personally and musically, but their essence remains the same. It’s been more than 20 years, but they have always been there.

This cover can be interpreted as a perfect metaphor for what we will find in the album: Those songs that have become “classics” in the recent history of pop-rock music are now reinterpreted with a more mature, orchestral touch, but preserving inside that fresh essence that is able to evoke feelings, to move and to touch in a way that only their music is able to.

But not everything in Something Else is about remembering the old days. In this album, The Cranberries have gifted us with three unpublished, brand-new songs, of which we already know the titles: “The Glory”, “Rupture” and “Why”, a song that, according to recent declarations of the band, could be the new single and that we are extremely thrilled to listen to.

This is Something Else’s tracklist:

  1. Linger
  2. The Glory
  3. Dreams
  4. When You’re Gone
  5. Zombie
  6. Ridiculous Thoughts
  7. Rupture
  8. Ode to My Family
  9. Free to Decide
  10. Just My Imagination
  11. Animal Instinct
  12. You & Me
  13. Why

As the band has just announced, you can already preorder a copy of this long-awaited masterpiece album, signed by The Cranberries, for only 12€ in their official online shop: https://cranberries.lnk.to/store

We were all waiting for “something else” by The Cranberries, and “Something Else” is now a reality. Because we wanted it, because we owe it to them, and what’s more important: because, like them, time may have gone by, but we have always been there.

SOME DETAILS ABOUT THE NEW ALBUM

The Cranberries do not waste their precious time. During their stay in Cancun for the three concerts at Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resorts on February 10th, 11th and 12th, the band has been photographed for their new album and they have offered a press conference in which they have given some details about it.

We still have no title for the eighth album of the Irish quartet, of which we know it will be an acoustic album together with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, in which they will bring their greatest classics together with three brand-new songs. The album has just been recorded and although the single has not yet been decided, Dolores thinks it could be the song “Why”, for which a video clip will also be recorded once they have returned to Europe.

In addition, The Cranberries were seen in Puerto Morelo, where they were doing a photo shoot from which fortunately we have a picture taken by César Enrique Vera.

As Dolores would explain during the concert, a photo of that session will be used for the album cover.

Dolores has also talked about how she incorporates her own experiences, reflections and emotions into her lyrics and how these reflections help her to move forward.

There is no doubt that this album brings together all the components to make us enjoy, feel and relive, bringing back old memories from the best moments of our lives where the nostalgia of a glorious past will hold hands with the optimistic vision of a promising future.
